The main strong point of CASA 9: the setting and local products… its quality of comfort and materials… the garden, its flora and fauna, switch to “slow life” mode

Our commitment to sustainable tourism

At CASA 9, the environment is an integral part of the art of living that we want to share with you. We have decided to do everything possible to guarantee you responsible tourism with even more pleasure and change of scenery.

The comfort of architecture with high environmental quality

We have restored the Mas with great patience and humility. Priority has been given to noble and sustainable materials such as stone, wood and wrought iron, largely reusing those of the site. Improvement of the thermal and acoustic insulation of the rooms and of the whole of the Mas.

Our environmental policy

CASA 9 makes every effort to offer you more comfort and a change of scenery while reducing our ecological footprint.

Our daily actions

Locavore, our partners are all local, from the jam jar to the website, including our laundry, mostly in Thuir and its surroundings, few are outside the department. Everything served in our establishment is produced in the department, from fruit juice to beer via sparkling water, we favor our terroir, organic products and sustainable agriculture. For products such as coffee and tea, which are not produced locally, they are purchased in Thuir and Perpignan. We do not make purchases over the internet.

Anti waste, We buy according to our needs, we do not buy wholesale, hence our services only by reservation. Our local producers use standard containers, so there is little individual container as for jams that avoids waste. Breakfasts are served as a buffet, on the other hand with tables set to avoid filling too many plates (with cleanable sets), if they were free to access; preparations and hot drinks are prepared by the minute.

Biodiversity, fauna and flora, our wooded park crossed by a small arm of the canal which irrigates part of the neighbors, includes rural hedges with fruit shrubs, wild flowers, small piles of wood, leaves or stones interesting for various insects and small mammals such as bees, birds and bats We have for a few years reintroduced fish into our pond in order to fight against mosquito larvae although these are rare, having no stagnant water, indeed our pond is fed by constant water; young fish too small to stay in the tank are placed in the tank until they are large enough to return to..

Of course we use no pesticides; pesticides are substances which aim to destroy one or more species of living beings, they include insecticides, anti-pests, fungicides and herbicides or weedkillers. We favor against weeds as soon as they appear, eliminating using a hoe or equivalent. For terraces and walkways, boiling water is radical for killing vegetation or coarse sea salt..

We favor against insects and certain diseases, the use of repellents and black soap-based solution, or a decoction of tansy.

We favor bio-control against pests by promoting the presence of natural predators or by using mechanical means.

Waste reduction, we use bean machines for breakfast coffee, the grounds being compostable, the pods in the rooms are emptied and the aluminum is thus sorted for metals. The tables are set with cleanable and more disposable sets. Our in-room products are of natural origin and recyclable, such as wadding tissues or paper pads.Packaging represents half of our trash by volume, we favor reusable packaging, the advantage of purchasing directly from local producers, as well as lean purchases. We also favor reusable packaging such as laundry linens, being biodegradable, we recycle them into garbage bags.

We sort out into five categories, packaging, glass, metals, compostable and household waste, as well as in the rooms as far as possible. Our compost is used in our plantations and avoids any addition of fertilizer.

Reuse what we already have, we favor the reuse of deteriorated laundry for cleaning and work such as painting, in other words, to extend the life cycle of a laundry. We favor repair over replacement.

Cleaning and disinfection, We favor ventilation with the windows opening at least twice a day.

Many commercial products turn out to be toxic on inhalation, on contact but are also rarely biodegradable, such as products with the words “isothiazolinone” (MIT, BIT), or even “perfumes” (limonene, linalool, eugenol, geraniol, cironellol…) and quaternary ammoniums, we favor natural products such as white vinegar, alcohol, baking soda, black soap, etc. They release less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are more easily biodegradable. Use of steam cleaner.

Limit water consumption, the majority of rooms have a shower. Taking a shower rather than a bath allows you to divide your water requirements by 3 (60 liters against nearly 200 liters). Using a Dishwasher, the dishwasher, when full, uses 2 to 3 times less water than hand-made dishes. Using tap water rather than bottled water is good for the environment, saving the production of unnecessary packaging. It is the best of waters (in France…); it is balanced (unlike certain mineral waters, unsuitable for regular consumption). We favor the use of steam cleaners to reduce water consumption. Awareness by posting in the rooms to reduce the cleaning of towels and thus reduce the environmental impact.

No tablecloths or napkins for breakfast, these must be changed at each service, the water consumption is too high, it is better to clean the placemats and recycle small wadding napkins (eco-label).

The plantations are irrigated naturally and not by mains water.

Limiting unnecessary energy consumption : No tablecloths or napkins for breakfast, these must be changed at each service, the water consumption is too high, it is better to clean the placemats and recycle small wadding napkins (eco-label). using the washing machine and the dishwasher full by using the Eco button, the Eco program of a dishwasher saves 45% of electricity compared to an intensive program. We prefer heating to the right temperature than in occupied rooms, it is useless when we ventilate. Heating represents 66% of consumption. Our electrical and electronic devices are switched off and not on standby in unoccupied rooms. Turning off the watches can reduce electricity by up to 10%. Awareness by display in rooms to reduce lighting; as soon as possible, indoor and outdoor detector lighting; limitation of night lighting by programming and thus reduce the environmental impact and also not to disturb wildlife. Use of LED bulbs. We prefer as soon as possible devices with batteries or rechargeable batteries.

Adoption of responsible digital consumption, in all stages of its life cycle (resource extraction, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life), digital technology generates many environmental impacts. Terminal equipment, data centers and computer networks are large consumers and have a growing energy and environmental footprint. Digital technology therefore consumes 10% of the world’s electricity. We favor the use of our IT equipment as long as possible by promoting re-use and repair; more sober use of digital services, reduce your internet footprint (less unnecessary data stored in the Cloud); recycling IT equipment in official circuits (recycling center) and not in the trash. And of course, no more printing, just by necessity, our consumable consumption reduced by 75%.
